Alebrije El Shaman.

Exclusive Ik-Kan design.

Author: Rafael Baca

Sculpture made with the cardboard technique and decorated with natural pigments using the "Mayan fresco" technique.

Approximate measurements: 90x70x60 cm

This piece participated in the XLIV Edition of the 2019 National Popular Art Grand Prize and was selected for the exhibition of the same year, at the Los Pinos Cultural Center in Mexico City.

It was created from the conjunction of three representative animals of the Yucatan peninsula and with an important weight in the worldview of the Mayan culture: the opossum, the saraguato monkey and the iguana or as it is known in the Yucatan peninsula "the tolok ".

These animals represented forces that converged in the universe of the Mayans. The opossum was capable of entering the underworld, in addition to being an animal linked to magic and sorcery, it was believed that he was in charge of carrying the lords of Xibalba on his back when they had to purify the world. The saraguato monkey was the representation of the highest spirituality, in addition to being linked to art, for this reason it was represented as a god. And the tolok or iguana was the representation of the monster of the earth, the channel through which life emerged from the underworld. In this way the piece takes its identity from concepts linked to spiritual and inframural aspects, from magic and rituals and from the complementarity of life-death. "The Shaman" is in charge of bringing to our reality the wisdom of the Mayan ancestors, since on his skin he has engraved scenes of ancient rituals, deities and passages from the creation of the universe, all these faithful reproductions of the Dresden codex and of vessels belonging to the "Princeton" collection.

For the realization of this piece, a research, conceptualization and creation work was carried out for approximately 4 months.
